L/O: To research the history,companies & regulators
in the TV industry

Watershed: times when adult content can be shown. between 9pm & 5:30 am
Segmented market: audience divided into different groups depending on taste
interests.
Franchise: licence from company of a product to use format/show/ideas

In 1927 TV was introduced to the uk.
In 1965 there were only 3 channels (CBS,NBS and ABC)
ITV started in 1955 on the 22 of September
Channels 3,4,5 S4C and the BBC have to follow PBS remits
Ofcom regulates TV now
In the 1960's all 3 channels were self regulated

L/O: to explore the ownership & regulation of BB1 & ITV

The Key Principles are to of the BBC

"TO INFORM,EDUCATE & ENTERTAIN"

18/10/21

ITV1,channel 4 and 5 are commercially funded channels but because they are
terrestrial the have to follow some PSB guide lines

Commercial channels make their money through different
ways besides ads these are some

subscriptions
pay per view
sponsorship
Product placement

In the 1960s Itv and the bbc had a duopoly over tv this
was good because it was easy to regulate and content could be better
also this means that there is less choice for the consumer which is good or bad
depending on who you are but it could also be hard to get new points of view
on tv.

1/11/21  TV Audiences

L/O: to explore how audiences consume TV dramas and the appeals

Ways for people to access TV programs
The TV
Online (streaming services,websites)
Phone apps

THEORY: The active audience
this focus on debates as to whether an audience
is active or passive

A Passive Audience accepts and believes everything
a media text will tell them.

An Active Audience questions what they are being told
and form their own opinion.

Audience ratings are measured by BARB

Crime drama: line of duty
Period drama: The Crown
Teen drama: My mad fat diary
Medical drama: scrubs
Science Fiction drama: Dr who
Political drama: jack and bobby

Lots of historical events happened, the civil rights movements,JFK was assassinated
the first man on the moon, the cuban missile crisis.
The Vietnam war was being fought and people in the uk
protested against it.
life in the 1960s would of been a weird time to live through
because a lot of things changed and social norms started to collapsed.

8/11/21  The Avengers (1965)

The Avengers Season 4 Ep 1

In the episode john steed and emma peel go to a small sea side town to investigate
strange happenings and the disappearing agents. They meet Mr Smallwood on the train
and he is later killed. they then find out that Russian spies have taken over the town and plan
to slowly take the uk by replacing the uk's population with Russians.
Other Characters :
piggy warren
Mrs Manson
Tom Smallwood
Mr Brandon
Emma Peel is used to make the show appeal to the male audience. She also represents the change in popular fashion at the time as she wares very new (at the time).
The take over plan by Russia shows the influence of the cold war and how the show uses
it for plot lines.

28/11/21

Uses and Gratifications of the Avengers.

Personal identity:
Emma peel is a character that could appeal to women at the time because she
was adventurous and independent she would go off and find things out herself
without a man having to help. This could show women that they are more independent
John steed could reinforce the ideal that men still need to save women and they are more equal
but still better

Information:
could gain information about the world of the upper class
could gain information about the world of espionage/spies.

Entertainment:
could enjoy the escapist plots
could de-stress by losing themselves in Avengers' world
could enjoy the danger of the heroes situation and
how they escape.

Social interaction:
could watch the programme together as a family
would enjoy discussing episodes with friends and co-workers
wouldn't want to be left out
could build a personal relationship with the characters and feel like they are friends with the characters
A sense of Britishness gained in Britain and abroad from the programme

The Avengers: The Town of No Return
The potential threats of the country influenced media heavily.
The avengers was similar to a lot of films and TV at the time with
most also being about spies or invasion. films like it happened here and the
war game showed this.

The main characters are always confident and composed showing the audience that
the 'threats to the country' aren't that threatening.

6/12/21
L/o: to analyse representation and influence of social & cultural context in series 4 ep 1

Blumer an kats theory uses and gratification theory

Personal Identity:they might relate to a character

information:To know what is happening in the world or in a show.

the pub has a sad feeling. plays into the stereotype that everyone is sad in england
steed forces peel to have a drink
piggy talks in a chippy accent
Peel is a representation of changing atitudes towards women she is independent and intelligent

Changing attitudes: age

The Avengers: extract analysis  13/12/21

L/O: to explore elements of media language and practice how to analyse an extract

Media language

low angle, high angle, canted angle:slanted angle, or aerial shots

location/set
props
casting and performance style
blocking(the composition of elements within the shot)

Television in the 2010s  17/1/22    BEGING CUFFS

L/O: research the 2010s uk

things that happened in the 2010s

Britain held the olympics
ship crashed
conservatives won again
lots of illegal immigrants
Brexit
London riots

1.the conservatives were in power David Cameron was PM. ukip gained popularity
possibly due to the 911 crisis and increasing "fear" of immigrants and specifically
islamic immigrants.

3.wars being fought. Afganistan,Iraq,syrian

4. people in the uk were protesting against the government taking away money from public causes
and increasing tuition fees

In cuffs i would expect there to be a lot different from the avengers.
Representation to be a lot wider and men not being the best all the time
and other people than just white people.
espionage won't be as much of a threat anymore but terrorism might be

aired October 2015,at times that family audiences would see,8 pm,
targeted to 16-65s
offered a range of characters and storylines to appeal to as many people as possible
due to it being before the watershed it couldn't go into most topics in depth
tiger aspect productions made the program

Uses & gratifications

Personal Identity: The show contains a wide cast for the audience to identify with:Different ethnicitys
racial diversity, a gay character.
There is a woman in a high up position and they could be seen as a role model.
Jake is gay and it isn't an important part of who he is.
Ryan is a single parent, single parents might like seeing him as a character.
it shows police in a positive light

Information:The social realism offers a sense of informing the audience
about police work and the criminal world

Social Realism: a style of drama that is grounded in the
contemporary world in terms of setting, characters and social issues, often portraying
social injustice

Brighton is represented:
Having an unruly public
The public hit and insult the police
typical old fat white man
lots of social issues:drugs, racism, people being rude to the police
it's a contrasting having  beautiful scenery but also run down and graffiti

7/2/22  cuffs & Social context

PC Donna Prager:
Donna is always shown with Lino in episode 1 but she is the stronger
of the 2. This breaks the patriarcal stereotype that men are stronger.
she is of a similar status to most of the cast being a police countable
like Ryan,Jake and Lino

PC Jake Vickers:
Jake isn't represented in a traditionally masculine ways.
Compared to the other officers he isn't as good in experience, decisiveness
and compared to donna isn't as strong.
He's gay but it isn't an important part of who he is,it isn't a problem unlike
other shows that might focus on it to much.

Ryan Draper:
Is represented as traditionally masculine but also having some stereotypical female traits as well.
He has power and is respected by his peers. trusted to mentor the chiefs son (masculine)
He's gentle with members of the public(e.g the drug addict) (Feminine)
He is determined and focused during the car case (masculine)
He responds with courage and determination to the ram-raid call (masculine)
He is emotional when he gets angry with jake (Feminine)

Jake Vickers:inexperienced,determined. anti-stereotypical
Lino Moretii:comical,Diligent: stereotypical side-kick character

Jake's character challenges the stereotype of homosexuality being a problem because no problems
in the show are caused by it.The only problems caused by jake are his inexperience and who is father is.
It also shows a growing acceptance to other sexuality's because jake mentions it and nothing else is thought of it.

In cuffs multiculturalism is show to be present and accepted in uk society having a very diverse cast.
racism is shown to still be an issue but racists are represented very negatively.

The attitudes to the police from the public is reprentsented as being negative.

analysis home work on this cover I found

The colour pallet contains blue, green, turquoise and pink. These colours have the connotation of nature and wildlife but a more hidden secret wildlife. These might have been chosen to complement the included album "the colours od spring" or the other way around.  The lexis uses words like "her secrets unlocked, why?,Nick cave, the lost interview" these cover lines are used to captivate the reader and want to discover the mysteries in the issue.  The cover image shows Kate Bush with wildlife around her this is probably because her name has Bush in it (very funny)

INSOMNIA poster analysis

This poster has a dark colour   pallet with an all dark  background with red being  the main colour being red  witch dose connote to the horror genre as these are colours that  are highly used as red can be  seen as blood or in some cases   insanity and black is dark and  most people have a fear of the  dark the white in the text adds  to the insanity theme. The main image shows a  character has a sort of low angle this done to try to make seem more powerful than them or to show the hole character. The name is of the film is spelled using a style that look's like it was scrawled into the wall like a crazy person.
