20/01/21 Genres and target audience
Things to think about when identifying an audience for a music magazine. What kind of genre will be in/on the magazine so then you can focus on making it look more appealing to the people who like those music genres. The average age of your audience.
8/2/21
L.O/to analyse a cover of a magazine, linking it genre and audience
Baby Boomer is a name given to anyone born between 1946 and 1964.
diversification is when someone or something diversifies there company or image
Audience address is when the reader is directly spoken to normally with phrases like "you need to get this".
discerning means having or showing good judgement
How someone chooses to have there layout and presentation is their house style.
Codes and conventions are things that are similar/common in different forms of media
The codes and conventions of a rock magazine. The colour palette can be many things sometimes the colours can be chosen to contrast against the colours of what the person/people are wearing. Sometimes they will use bright colours to make it stand out and some text may be coloured in if it is something the writer wants you focus on.
The images used are normally pictures of the person or band the issue is focusing on or pictures of some of there album covers maybe used.
The mastheads(titles) are normally written in sans serif fonts and are usually big and noticeable.
The text around the main image normally give information about what you can find in the magazine. They are very prominent on the page to make sure you read them.
Cover analysis of the mojo Cover above.
The cover shot is a mid forward facing shot of the star of the magazine Dave Grohl. The colour palette features a bright blue for the background and uses a brighter yellow and red for the more interesting text and a white and grey for the less important words. It mentions a couple of other artists such as Ian Dury, Lou Reed, Cat Stevens and Elvis. The title is in block capitals and is mostly obscured by Dave Grohl but not so much where you can't see it.
22/3/21 Magazine Deconstruction
L/O:to analyse media texts using key concepts and appropriate terminology
The main image is a close up shot which is used to really emphasise that Ed Sheeran is the main attraction of the magazine. The use of the cover lines that say the names of musicians that are seen as quality musicians could suggest that they are trying to say that Ed Sheeran is a quality musician. The pull quote in the middle is normally something interesting or catchy that someone would read and want to read more.
The font that says Ed Sheeran is made to look like it's hand written by hand which could be to show that he writes his own music which makes him seem even more like a quality musician.
24/3/21 Music Magazines & Audiences
L/O: to identify and analyse a target audience using demographics & psychometrics
Things to think about when identifying an audience

There is a grading system called the social grading categories and there 6 grades
and they are split into 2 groups. There is the the higher skilled/higher income group

There are 4 main ways magazines make money:
Sales (Circulation)
Adverting
Sponsored content & Product placement
Events
The most money is made from adverting.
it can cost thousands to get your ad in a magazine
Mojo profit/costs
a mojo magazine goes for about £5.95
The subscription service is £4.40 for a monthly digital copy
and £1.80 for a digital
Most Publishing companies aren't big conglomerates because the skills needed to publish
print magazines are very specific.
The magazine industry is very globalised you can see this with mojo because a lot of the bands
in mojo magazines are american but they still publish in places like the uk
Mojo are regulated by IPSO
19/4/21 Exam Prep
L/O:to explore the possible exam tasks for music magazines
In the mojo Madonna magazine using a black and white filter
and things like black lip stick and a nose ring she is made to look anti
stereotypical from what pop singers like Madonna normally look like. The fact
that Madonna is on the cover is very different from most mojo covers because a large
majority of mojo covers feature men.
The colours used are very traditionally rock with the main colours
being black and white with the text colours being blue which gives it a cold feeling
and red which connotes to things like blood, the devil and anger and rock music is known
for being loud and angry and violet.
The colour pallet of the 2 magazines are similar but are used differently
in the BBC magazine the black and white is used to make it look professional
and high class and only using red text for the important things while thee mojo
cover uses black and white to give it a gothic feel which is helped with the blue
text.
The BBC magazine has Sarah dressed in a pink dress holding a violin which
gives the feeling of someone proper and doesn't follow far from someone who plays music
in her genre. Meanwhile Madonna a pop singer is dressed in things very far from what normal
pop singers wear.
The different media language is used very differently in the two magazines because of the
reputation of the company and the likes of there readers. The BBC is known for more
intellectual topics and for more proper readers that would probably not be to fond of reading a mojo magazine

21/4/20
L/O;To choose case studies and research initial differences
I am using case study 4
The first song is Not Letting Go by Tinie Tempah
It is a pop song That was released on 21 June 2015 and features Jess Glynne
The song is about someone who likes their girlfriend very much and dose not want to leave her
Here are some of his song/album covers
It is a mix between a performance music video and a concept
The second song is Pieces by Paloma Fait
It is a mix between a performance music video and a narrative
it goes against most music video conventions by not having her preform in front of the camera
It is a illustration style narrative video
5/5/21 Media Language In Music Videos
L/O:To Explore & analyse the use of media language in
chosen case studies
Performance based music videos feature a solo artist or a band performing to the camera. ... This category includes the recording of live performance, with the aim of demonstrating an artistic talent that is not captured in the recording, such as capturing the energy and enthusiasm of live fans.
Features of a Concept Video - A concept video will include unusual images or narratives to maintain audience engagement. - It is possible that the video will have no connection with the lyrics. - Some videos are purely artistic and will show sequences with no obvious narrative and lip syncing.
A narrative music video is a music video that trys to tell a story.
there are different kinds of narrative videos
An illustrative narrative is a narrative where every visual aspect o the video are based on the lyrics. For example the music video “Do the Creep” by Nicki Minaj and John Waters has a very illustrative concept to the video, as everything visual within the video is linked back to the lyrics of the song.
Amplification • Amplification: Performance and narrative are both a part of this meaning. It means. that new meanings are being offered that do not differ to the lyrics, instead the video adds to the meaning of the song which may or may not be obvious. The meaning is constantly repeated throughout the video.
Disjuncture is when the imagery doesn't match the lyrics of the video and trys to make
a new set of meanings.
Representation 23/6/21
In both Not letting go and picking up the pieces the only
sexuality shown is straight.
In both ,Love is shown in the context of relationships but Not letting go shows it in
a positive light while picking up the pieces shows it negatively
Younger people in not letting go are shown as fun loving and
known for hanging out in large groups. also it gives the impression that
love is an important thing to them because they are singing about it.
relationships in not letting go are shown as being important and a big part of life
.In picking up the pieces relationships are shown as fragile and complicated.
In Tinie Tempah's video ethnicity in the uk is shown a being highly diverse
while in Paloma Fait's video only white people are shown most people in the video
are seen as being higher class, they live in a mansion and have servants, and this could
show that their are more rich white people and black.

FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY UNIT:
I need to revise what media language encompasses (narrative, and otherr things)
13/9/21 BBC:Live lounge
L/o: to explore the industry and audience behind
the live lounge
The BBC operates 40 regional radio stations
The BBC is funded by tv licences the uk people have to buy
PSB radio's (public service broadcast) direct competition is commercial radio
stations like Heart, pirate Fm,LBC London and island fm.
you can listen to BBC radio 1 on a radio, their app, website and there is a tv channel
that shows it for some reason.
BBC radio 1 remit:
They must strive to entertain and engage a broad range of young
listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech.
it's target audience is 15-29.
It should support emerging artists especially those from the uk
and provide a platform for live music
The BBC radio 1 website meets it's remit this is done by
using things like a mixture of bright and dark colours and
simple patterns to make it look interesting to it's audience.
Another way the BBC meets it remit is it shows relevant
musicians like billie Elish and other musicians that i haven't
heard of. there are a lot of links to playlists of different music
and not so popular artists.
Convergence: Media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging
of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to the digitalisation
and computer networking.
BBC radio 1: the live lounge can be accessed via the commercial platform vevo
this helps the BBC because more people can access the show and watch it. It helps
vevo because people who liked the live lounge can now watch it be more engaged
because you are more engaged by what you can then what you can hear. This also make
it easier for people to come across the live lounge.
20/9/21
Plurality is ensuring that there is a diversity of viewpoints available
and consumed across and within different media enterprises. Stoping any 1
opinion from becoming the only opinion.
L/O: to explore the format of the live lounge and it's
appeals
Clara Amfo : Clara Amfo is a British radio and television presenter, best known for presenting on BBC Radio 1. In 2020, she competed in the eighteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing.
she has the glamour award for radio personality.
she has presented the brit awards for 4 years.
she started as a marketing intern for kiss fm
The BBC's live lounge appeals to it's audience by featuring artists that
would interest them. they get to hear music they like and get to know
more about artists. It gives fans something to talk about wether it be with
there friends or online.
27/9/21
L/O:To research the case study and artists involved
Rag'n'bone man research:
Rory Charles Graham, better known as Rag'n'Bone Man, is an English singer and songwriter. He is known for his deep baritone voice. His first hit single, "Human", was released in 2016, and his debut album of the same name was released in 2017.
He is 36 years old
He is a alternative/indie singer
His newer songs include alone, fall in love again and others.
His early music was mainly drum and base
Rag'n'bone man live lounge notes:
episode date:16/9/21
He played his song Alone,
He covered the griff ( an upcoming British artists) song one foot in front of the other
half way through they played how can i make it ok (he didn't preform this)
They talked about food
Talked about other people that had been on the show
Talked about his musical tastes and what he likes to watch
He covered a song from a new artist technically meeting the remit of showing
new and upcoming British artists.
How does the live lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit?
The BBC live lounge appeals to it's target audience by staring people
that are popular and familiar to it's target audience of 15-29 year olds.
This can be seen in the case study with rag'n'bone man who is a popular
indie artist. While on the show he talks about himself and his life which
would be interesting to people who do and don't him because they get to
know more about him. He being on the live lounge helps meet the BBC
remit of showing a range of uk artists, although he is not a emerging artist
he did cover the song one foot in front of the other by griff who is a lesser known
artist Rag'n'bone Mans audience is a lot greater than Griff's so the show introduces
a large amount of people to griff therefor meeting the part of the remit that says about
supporting new artists.
My Target for writing exam answers is to make sure to point out what the point is
taking about.

In this you must use knowledge of the case study
16/3/22 MUSIC VIDEOS again
I am Using case study 1 Sk8ter boy and teenage dirtbag
Sk8ter boy is a pop song by Avril Lavigne released in the uk
in 2002.In the video Avril Lavigne and her crew go around handing
out flyers and vandalise things that talk of an event that is going to happen.
then we see people going around setting up speakers a microphone and other sound
equipment in the middle of new York. then Avril Lavigne preforms the song on the street
surrounded by a crowd. The Purpose of this music video was to showcase Avril Lavigne's
musical ability to her target audience of teenagers at the time. It's able to do this because of it's
rebellious nature and how they do something so against the grain. this would of been appealing to
teenagers that wanted to rebel and cause a riot.
Teenage Dirt Bag is also a pop song but is made by Wheatus and was released in the uk
in the year 2000. In the music video the protagonist(played by Jason Biggs) gets bullied and
treated like a sterotypical nerd. In between those scenes the band can be seen playing the song.
In one of the scenes the nerd gets food thrown at him and then the super chad's girlfriend leaves him.
then it cuts to the prom, the nerd is sitting alone until the girl comes back and then they dance. it is then revealed that it was all a dream.
Avril Lavigne Sk8ter boy
It is a performance style music video but scattered through out the video
there are some narrative elements.
the main represented demographic in the video are alternative, skater teenagers that don't conform
to whats popular to most.
In the opening secen is a low shot
that focus on some spraycans. this connotes
thoughts of grafiti,vandalism, rebelliousness.
The technology used in these seceens would
appeal to the 2000s teenage target audience
because they would of used those things.
The camera work used is fast paced and gives
the feel of adrenaline and that somethings happening
There are a lot of things happening mainly
people vandalising and breaking laws, this in
conjunction with the fast paced camerawork
renforces the feeling of an big event happening or perhaps an uprising and it gives
a feeling of adrenaline.
The wide shot used here establishes that
she is the leader of whats going on.
Her biking indoors gives the feeling of escapism and some teens may relate to this because they have dreamed of breaking rules
but never do.
The bands being shown playing their
instruments shows their musical skill and
can influence young people how want to
have or have musical skill to pursue their dream.
The use of real locations and clothing that people would actually wear gives the impression that they are a real band.
The Narrative suggested reflects heterosexual thoughts of
romance.
Teenage Dirtbag Wheatus
the opening scene starts of the ]
narrative by establishing the
3 main characters of nerd,jock.girl
The increased light and the slower pace shows that he is her dream girl.
her lack of interest in his bike shows that she doesn't care for him.
the background of the shots goes from packed in the chorus but empty in the second verse
The use of casual clothing makes the band seem more real and relates to the ta as they would wear the same
clothes. this is common in the punk/rock genre.
here a shot reverse shot is used
this shows that him and the girl are opposites. him being a nerd and she
is the popular girl.
The use of the L hand gesture relates to the narrative again showing him to be a nerd.
The shot reverse shots in the hall show that he doesn't fit in with his peers.
Exam format 6/6/22
case study: Harry styles uses informal speech, harry target audience includes that TA of
