Intertextuality
Postmodern films often contain the
following characteristics:
Challenges genre conventions:might be
a mixture of many genres;challenge
typical character roles etc.
Pastiche: imitates other texts
humorous take on society/culture
Hyper-reality:makes the audience
aware that they are watching a movie
23/9/20 Narrative Theory
Todorov: Narrative Theory
A film's narrative is the story of a
film and is broken down into 5 key
stages by theorist Tzvetan Todorov
1. Equilibrium:Everything is how it has been in the film world(dosen't mean good just normal)
2.Disruption:The normal is disrupted maybe by the antagonist maybe not but normal is gone
3. Recognition:The Protagonist realises that something has happened
4. Attempt to solve disruption:The Protagonist/s starts to try and restore equilibrium
5. New Equilibrium:The disruption is solved and a new normal is established
Todorov's Theory applied to the Lego movie
Equilibrium:Everything is normal to Emmet everyone is following the manual
and not causing panic
Disruption:Emmet comes across the piece of Resistance and it get
fused to his back
Recognition of Disruption:When Emmet meets Vitruvius and he explains
what the piece of resistance is
Attempt to solve disruption:Emmet makes the plan for his team to
infiltrate the Octan tower and put the piece of resistance on the kragle.
New Equilibrium:President Business changes his ways and worlds
are allowed to collide.
Propp's Spheres of action

5/10/20 Intertextuality
L.O:to explore the similarities between
The Matrix and The Lego Movie
Intertextuality:when one piece of media references another.
Matrix and The Lego Movie
The setting for both films are similar but different in there own way.
The Matrix is set in a world that turns out to be a computer simulation
The Lego movie is set in a world entirely made of lego and then is shown to be
a basement filled with lego.
7/10/20 Target Audience
L.O:to identify the target audience using demographics and psychographics
The Lego Movie targets a family audience
That could be split into the following groups
three groups:
Young kids who play with lego:The film appeals to young kids by being bright and made of lego
and having everyone be friends in the end and also the annoying music probably only appeals to young
kids
Parents who played with it when they were young:The film uses some of the older lego sets that the
adults might of used and they might be happy that the film teaches children do believe in themselfs and to be creative.
Young adult cinema-goers:The films actions and small romance scenes appeal the most to the young adult audience
Lego movie audience profile (unfinished)
Evaluate the advantages and the disadvantages
of the intertextual relationship between the Matrix
and The Lego Movie.
The advantages of the lego movie and the
Matrix's intertextuality are plentiful
adults that loved the matrix would want
to see it more if they new about the connection
and it gets rid of the need to make a whole new
story thread and can just leach of the matrix.if
someone liked the lego movie but haven't seen
the matrix might decide to watch it making
warner bros more money
The disadvantages are small but still there
the story could be to complex for some kids like
the multiple worlds. Adults that hated the matrix would
probably not be to inclined to watch a simplified kids matrix

A tent-pole production is a piece of media that is made to
support the financial performance of a film studio or television network.
A tent pole production may be expected to help the sales of tie in merchandise.
The lego movie helps warner bros because is helps them make smaller films
that won't make as much money but money won't be lost because of the tent pole.
for the film
17 lego stets were released
16 collectable mini figures
a video game was made
range of school supplies
sticker and activity book
A website was made where you could make your own mini figure
and was advertised on twitter.

Vertical Integration
When a parent company owns companies in all stages of production
Horizontal Integration
When a company owns production companies for other things beside the film
video games,music,products
1.conglomerate
2.money gets funnelled into you
to do something.
3.Synergy can result in higher sales for 1 or 2 companies
4.vertical Integration
5.the benefit of vertical Integration is that you don't have to pay others
6. A tent pole production is made with the idea of being successful
and make money
7.A Tent pole production lets the film maker make more niche films that wont
make as much money.

Gardian
What are the building blocks of success?
It needed to be appealing to kids and adults
What did lego do right?
They made a 100 minuet advertisement for lego that was
entraining for kids and adults.they did this buy geting writers of
adult comedys to make some of the jokes and parts of the film
more appealing to adults.
How has it laid the foundations for future success?
Because of it being lego it is easy for the creators to make
merchandise for the film.People who enjoyed the film will
probably buy the DVD so they can watch it again and its
high popularity boads well for the amount of ticket sales
for the sequel it might not be good but people will buy it to see
and if it were to turn out well they can release more things like lego sets.
Zesty
How has it got Heart?
It makes you feel. It doesn't just tell a story it
tells a story using emotion and interest.
How is it all about 'you'?
It makes you think about where you fit
weather you choose to be a part of something
bigger or choose to be on your own.
How does it show that it knows about it's audience?
It recognises its content pillars and who they are making it for
and perfects all of the requirements.
The lego movies success is half the film and half it's
genius and long spanding marketing campaign.
They did a lot of things for the campaign one of which is
the weekly events at lego's central store and the poster
series of the main characters.they also used social media
platforms like twitter to advertise a mini-figure maker
website which when you had completed your character
you could put it in the video game that released 10 before
the film which some would of bought and then got exited for the
film.
Also 17 lego sets where make before the film and a series
of collectable mini-figures.
Tv advertising 2/11/20
The lego ad marketing team put the ad on
at peak time ITV a channel and time
were they could have the most people see
their ad.
Their ad was a recreation of 4 well known TV ads in
lego brick by brick.
At 7.27pm on the 9th of February ITV aired the worlds
first all lego made ad.
List of ads made into lego

6million people watched the ad live
and in the week 1.1m people watched it on youtube
without any digital optimisation.
all of that 1.1 million watched the ad all the way through
The lego movie's branded marketing was so astronomical
that it was probably the main reason the film did so well on
it's first showing.
The Time and place that it was shown was perfect it was on
ITV at peak time while dancing on ice was showing and at
7,27 an all lego ad was shown. It had lego recreations of
ads that were currently going and were commonly known
the ad did so well that in that week 1.1 million people
saw it on youtube. This ad caused an explosion on
social media of people talking about how surprising the ad was.

uses and Gratifications
1.Personal identity: helps us consider

3.Entertainment: offers distraction

Explain how the lego movie video game
cover is constructed to appeal to the target
audience? 7+
The cover gives you a brief idea of who is bad
and who is good having Emmet,Wildstyle,Vituvius
and Batman in the front in the light while president
business looming over them ominously in darker colours.
this little amount of information could get someone intrigued
in the game and buy it.
The fact that emmet is in the fore front in a builders outfit
holding a big blue spanner could also give the idea of the
games main theme building.
The game poster while different has a similar look to
the film poster having Emmet in the front and uses the same colours and
The Lego Movie logo is present in both
making it easy to link the 2.

DIRT DONE IN PURPLE

Somethings in the poster are emphasised to give a idea of the
games main themes.Directly in the front Emmet is standing
in a builders outfit holding a big bright blue spanner.
This gives the idea that games main purpose of building
and creating. This would be intriguing to the target audience
of kids who like to build/kids who like to build with lego.
POSTER CAMPAIGN
L/O:to explain the effectiveness of the
campaign; to analyse the poster campaign
On this poster you can see fire
making out a bat symbol on a partialy
destroyed building.around this is smoke,
darkness and a man standing in some sort
of suit.
The fire can give you the idea of panic or
an emergency and the bat symbol gives the idea of batman.
The destroyed building can show that the film
may be an action film and could be seen as
a intense film.
The man in the costume could make you think of batman
or the fact it's really dark could make him seem like
the bad guy.

Hybrid:when a film mixes elements of different genres
Iconography:The visual elements, like props, that help
to symbolise a particular genre. Horror film:knives, blood, bodies
Explain how The Lego Movie
theatrical poster is constructed
to appeal to its target
audience?
The characters running away from an
explosion and emmet screaming
connote towards it being an action adventure
which would appeal more to the younger audience
because they would want something interesting to watch.
The si-fi and comedy connotations like emmet screaming
and everyone else being serious and the robots could be more
interesting to the teen/adult audience because explosions
and action aren't the only things needed to make the older audience entertained.
All of the character posters
accept Wildstyle show someone special/working
benny is a astronaut;Emmet is a construction worker;
Vitruvius is a wizard, batman and lord business also are something
but wildstyle from her poster looks like some one who doesn't much.
23/11/20 Representation
L/O:to analyse the representation
throughout The Lego Movie
Promotional campaign
Men in the lego are main character as
emmet but they are not shown how men are normally
show. In the movie poster he is shown running away
screaming unheroically compared to wildstyle who is shown
looking heroic. men are not shown as the dominate gender
in the lego movie which subverts from normal stereotypes of
a patriarchal society.
In the movie poster wildstyle is behind Emmet but her expresion
is alot more heroic than Emmet the man male character. This makes
Wildstyle look like a more interesting character to women because
she is someone heroic and not someone who isn't good as the man which is how
women are represented more commonly in the media. In her character poster she
is running away from someone which also helps subvert the normal woman stereotypes.
Combined in ad break and video game trailer Wildstyle says almost nothing
with one line in the tailer and one scene in the game trailer. Using wildstyle
you could say that women are portrayed being not as important as males.
